How to install apps which require iOS 6 on a 1st gen iPad – via: Ask Different

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/05/08

I knew there was a way, but just not exactly how until I read the below trick by Chad.

Unlike the first commenter who thinks the trick only works when you purchased the app when it still supported older iOS versions, the trick also works when you haven’t purchased an app before. I donated an old iPad 1 after wiping it clean. The above method allowed the new user to install for instance Google Drive and other apps (but not Google+: that one refused).

  1. On your iPad 1, go to: “Settings” ==> “Store” ==> under “Apps” make sure it says ‘OFF’.
  2. Go onto your computer (it doesn’t matter if you’re using PC or Mac) and open iTunes software.
  3. Then go to the iTunes store and download all the apps you want to be on your iPad.
  4. Ensure iTunes on the computer and your iPad are both signed into the same Apple ID, and the iPad is connected to internet.
  5. On your iPad go to App Store ==> Purchased ==> click on an individual app you want to install.
  6. Once you select install you’ll get a message pop up that says:”The current version requires iOS 6.1 or later, but you can download the last compatible version.”, choose “Download”

reStructuredText Markup Specification – sections (that translate to HTML headings)

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/05/05

So I won’t forget; source: reStructuredText Markup Specification – Sections

[2]

The following are all valid section title adornment characters:

! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~

Some characters are more suitable than others. The following are recommended:

= - ` : . ' " ~ ^ _ * + #

Rather than imposing a fixed number and order of section title adornment styles, the order enforced will be the order as encountered. The first style encountered will be an outermost title (like HTML H1), the second style will be a subtitle, the third will be a subsubtitle, and so on.

Below are examples of section title styles:

===============
 Section Title
===============

---------------
 Section Title
---------------

Section Title
=============

Section Title
-------------

Section Title
`````````````
Section Title
'''''''''''''
Section Title
.............
Section Title
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Section Title
*************

Section Title
+++++++++++++

Section Title
^^^^^^^^^^^^^

When a title has both an underline and an overline, the title text may be inset, as in the first two examples above. This is merely aesthetic and not significant. Underline-only title text may not be inset.

A blank line after a title is optional. All text blocks up to the next title of the same or higher level are included in a section (or subsection, etc.).

All section title styles need not be used, nor need any specific section title style be used. However, a document must be consistent in its use of section titles: once a hierarchy of title styles is established, sections must use that hierarchy.

Each section title automatically generates a hyperlink target pointing to the section. The text of the hyperlink target (the “reference name”) is the same as that of the section title.

I prefer this order because of decreasing “greyness”:

# * = + ^ ~ - : . _ ` ' "

Completely Uninstall Skype For Business (aka Lync) – Skype Community

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/05/05

I don’t need Skype (aka Lync) on all my VMs, for enough reasons (obnoxiously getting in the way even when not configured, downloading updates even though not used, taking up space, etc).

Removing it through appwiz.cpl is more than just a single step. The reason is that Skype can be part of Office and – despite the updates being called Skype – can be listed as the Lync component in Office.

So the removal is as follows:

  1. Run appwiz.cpl
  2. Select the Microsoft Office version you have installed
  3. Right click, then choose Change
  4. Choose “Add or Remove features” then “Continue”
  5. Choose the dropdown left of “Microsoft Lync” or “Microsoft Office”, then click “Not Available” and click “Continue”
  6. Wait for the removal to proceed, then click “Close”

Printing from the Atom editor

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/05/04

Atom is a great editor, but printing from it is still lacking, even though the issue has been opened again.

There is export-html, but it only prints the current source code, not the built-in Markdown Preview or add-on reStructuredText Preview Pandoc packages “Toggle Preview” views.

By name print-atom looks promising, but contrary to the advertised “Print current atom window using print dialog”, it prints the whole Atom UI, which is of no use at all.

The little red icon isn't an adornment. Even though it doesn't look like a button: It's clickable!

The little red icon isn’t an adornment. Even though it doesn’t look like a button: It’s clickable!

Then there is broadcast which at first only worked for me in 1.6.2 but not in 1.7.2. I even removed the whole ~/.atom directory to get it working: to no avail. It finally occurred to me that in the lower right there was a tiny red icon (which was blue in 1.6.2).

Below is the process to fix broadcast, and after that you can live-view from your web browser through http://localhost:8000 either of the rendered source text in the Atom editor, or the Preview pane in the Atom editor.

Even though hardly documented, these are the broadcast settings:

Only enable

Only enable “Broadcast To Others” if you want to access port 8000 from another machine.

Getting broadcast to work again

  • wasn’t caused by changes in the theming between 1.6.2 and 1.7.2 (where lots of colours changed)
  • wasn’t just an adornment: it’s in fact clickable

As soon as you click it you see this in the right pane:

Dutch demissionary cabinet want to use hospital DNA for justice department – via Privacy Barometer

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/05/01

Unbelievable: the demissionary cabinet in The Netherlands (which is only supposed to handle non-controversial matters as a new cabinet is being formed because of the election results) plans to use DNA stored in hospitals under the doctor-patient privilege for justice department use.

Even DNA materials stored in the past will be under the new proposed legislation.

Two Quick Methods for Finding Shared Folders in Windows

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/05/01

In addition to the two methods mentioned at Two Quick Methods for Finding Shared Folders in Windows (use net share or compmgmt.msc) I like this one:

fsmgmt.msc

It directly gets you to the “Shared Folders” inside compmgmt.msc

Troy Hunt: Reckon you’ve seen some stupid security things? Here, hold my beer…

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/04/29

I’d laugh if it wasn’t so embarrassing: [Archive.isTroy Hunt: Reckon you’ve seen some stupid security things? Here, hold my beer….

It reminds me of a Dutch agency with > 1 million low income people paying for a service to be on a notification list for rental houses becoming available that was within their legal rental limits.

If you were not on the list, you’d never gain enough points to get a rental home at all.

If you were on the list, then they’d sent your credentials in plain text requiring very limited information.

Your credentials then would reveal name, date of birth, social security number, full address, bank account and some other personal information.

They never notified me if the security complaint I filed was ever addressed.
