Trigger warning: recovering data of someone close to you which suddenly died

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/28

Sudden death sometimes is chosen, which makes it even for the ones close that are involved.

That’s why the below MCH2022 lecture by father and son Jilles and Jurre Groenendijk two years ago is really important.

I was reminded about it by a [Wayback/Archive] Thread by @jilles_com on Thread Reader App last week, but before that a big TRIGGER WARNING from the lecture:

Without prior warning, Twitter shares your data with grok AI, even for EU Twitter users

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/27

Mentioned this on various social media already yesterday, as then suddenly  – even for EU users, which is against their GDPR regulations – Twitter turned on data sharing with Grok AI of your Twitter data at x.com/settings/grok_settings (direct settings link) without given prior warning at all

I got this default setting despite living in The Netherlands and Twitter knowing that:

Figuring out what domains/IPs to whitelist for installing/updating winget sources and packages

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/25

A few years ago I asked for some help figuring out what to whitelist so that winget can update its sources and install packages.

This is how I found out.

The queste started with [Wayback/Archive] Need help trying to figure out what domains/IPs to whitelist for installing packages · Discussion #2304 · microsoft/winget-cli

Injection Travel Kit by frozenfoxx | Download free STL model | Printables.com

Travel case for an injection kit. Includes spaces for draw and injection needles, syringes, vial, wipes, and bandages

Not just because they are injection kits, but because they form a base for other travel cases like one mentioned in the [Wayback/Archive] Comments: Injection Travel Kit by frozenfoxx | Download free STL model | Printables.com

Would it be possible to make this with a space for a horizontal storage for a similar sized via, and a 1-2mL ampule storage? The space could even be taken from one of the needle spaces, maybe.

Need to give this some thought: Poor Man’s Auto Update. by Chris Bensen | by Chris Bensen

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/23

Sometimes you need a relatively low-tech solution for updating.

I will need to give this some thought: [Wayback/Archive] Poor Man’s Auto Update. by Chris Bensen | by Chris Bensen | Jun, 2022 | Medium

Back then I posted some edits on Twitter which by now should be reflected in the script and GitHub repository at [Wayback/Archive] chris-blogs/PoorManAutoUpdate.md at main · chrisbensen/chris-blogs (with script at [Wayback/Archive] chris-blogs/updater.sh at main · chrisbensen/chris-blogs)

Reusing the motors and magnets of your old hard drives

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/22

Likely not suited for drones (as the motors are too heavy and have too high RPM), but maybe for other usage: [Wayback/Archive] Unlock the Potential of Your Old Hard Drives: Build a Drone Engine! – YouTube.

The motors do require extra controller logic, as they are BLDC (brushless DC), see for instance:

The other reason I like the video is that it shows how easy it is to salvage parts of your HDD. This comment is golden:

The magnets for the actuator are neodymium! Fun to play with!

Great tip by Jen Gentleman on Twitter: “Colour coding all my meetings – seriously I don’t know why I held off for so long, it made my calendar so much easier to read

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/22

Reminder to check out the tools I use so I can go [Wayback/Archive] Jen Gentleman on Twitter: “Colour coding all my meetings – seriously I don’t know why I held off for so long, it made my calendar so much easier to read”

This is the scheme that Jen uses: [Wayback/Archive] Jen Gentleman on Twitter: “@melvinjoosten Yeah – I have a lot of recurring meetings, so I use one colour for 1-1s, one colour for big team meetings, and one colour for office hours. It makes it a lot easier to spot the one off meetings which have been added to my calendar (which I leave the default colour)”

or in list form, differentiate between:

  • one-on-one
  • big team
  • office hours
  • default (for events added by others)
