The Deadlock Empire: end-screen

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/10/09

Forgot to schedule this back in the days, but this was the end screen of [Wayback/Archive] The Deadlock Empire (blog about it before, see links below):

Congratulations!

Two threads were in a critical section at the same time.

In the end… victory!

The Parallel Wizard is destroyed and his fortress crumbles at your feet. You have won. Never again will programmers over the world have to endure the difficulty of correct multithreaded programming because in defeating the Parallel Wizard, you have banished concurrency. The world will be as it was decades ago, with computer running at a reasonable speed and in the right order, as prescribed by the wise programmers.

‘Although,’ you wonder, ‘the tricks I used were somewhat useful… and I did feel quite a bit faster when parallelized. Perhaps there is something to this whole parallelism thing.’

Indeed, perhaps there is, commander. Perhaps parallelism is useful, after all, Master Scheduler. The points you make are valid and maybe you should not be so quick to dismiss the advantages of parallelism and faster execution. After all, with the skills you gained fighting The Deadlock Empire, don’t you think that you have become…

…an even greater Parallel Wizard?

Thank you, dear Scheduler, for playing The Deadlock Empire. We hope you had as much fun playing this game as we had making it. Concurrency programming is hard but it’s also beautiful in a way and the world can always use more people learned in its ways. You are to be congratulated for making it this far. We are looking forward to the new software or games you will create using your knowledge of multithreading.

You mastered all the lessons of The Deadlock Empire. Thank you for playing!
Any thoughts about the game or ideas for improvement? We’d like to hear those! Just fill out this form.

The “this form” link likely dies in 2025 because of the Googl shortener sunset earlier. It pointed to [Wayback/Archive] The Deadlock Empire feedback.

Now open sourced with a really restrictive license – WinampDesktop/winamp: Iconic media player

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/09/26

Winamp is a multimedia player launched in 1997, iconic for its flexibility and wide compatibility with audio formats. Originally developed by Nullsoft, it gained massive popularity with still millions of users. Its development slowed down, but now, its source code was opened to the community, allowing developers to improve and modernize the player to meet current user needs.

Via https://x.com/dosnostalgic/status/1838739822816514308

Like, this is the worst license I’ve seen in a while. One isn’t even allowed to *create* a fork.

5. Restrictions

• No Distribution of Modified Versions: You may not distribute modified versions of the software, whether in source or binary form.

• No Forking: You may not create, maintain, or distribute a forked version of the software.

Official Distribution: Only the maintainers of the official repository are allowed to distribute the software and its modifications.

Related:

  1. you cannot contribute without forking https://x.com/circuitrewind/status/1838746690511352095
  2. it’s incomplete too https://x.com/circuitrewind/status/1838747170846933202

The source also appears to be incomplete in at least one area that I just checked.

There is the mc.exe binary that a few of us have been wanting source to for a very VERY long time. They have the binary, and no source for it still.

Grady Booch on X: “Public pressure works!” – Grace Hopper lectures finally digitized and make public

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/08/31

Earlier this week NSA posted something I didn’t expect them to get done this soon, not even after all the public pressure about it mid last month (see for instance [Wayback/Archive] Admiral Grace Hopper’s landmark lecture is found, but the NSA won’t release it • MuckRock):

The were published as 2 YouTube videos(embedded videos below the blog post signature):

  1. 49 minutes [Wayback/Archive] Capt. Grace Hopper on Future Possibilities: Data, Hardware, Software, and People (Part One, 1982) – YouTube
  2. 41 minutes [Wayback/Archive] Capt. Grace Hopper on Future Possibilities: Data, Hardware, Software, and People (Part Two, 1982) – YouTube

More historic lectures at NSA: [Wayback/Archive] National Security Agency/Central Security Service > Helpful Links > NSA FOIA > Declassification & Transparency Initiatives > Historical Releases

Grace Hopper explaining the length of a nanosecond is mentioned in my blog post One second code: Do YOU know how much your computer can do in a second?.

Jilles preparing for a Red Team training event

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/08/01

Remember to adapt what you pack and tailor it for each red team training event as the blue team should expect the unexpected. Believable pretext is key.

[Wayback/Archive] jilles.com 🔜 MCH2022 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ on Twitter: “Need to pack enough breaking and entering stuff to pull a good show during the RedTeam training but not too much to get arrested on my way to work. Then again, I might pull it off when I put YMCA on in a loop, in case I get pulled over. “

[Wayback/Archive] jilles.com 🔜 MCH2022 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ on Twitter: “This will do for now ;-)”

Ransomware gangs are loving this dumb but deadly ESXi flaw • The Register

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/30

Do you have your VMware ESXi hypervisor joined to Active Directory? Well, the latest news from Microsoft serves as a reminder that you might not want to do that given the recently patched vulnerability that has security experts deeply concerned.

Essentially, if an attacker was able to add an AD group called “ESX Admins,” any user added to it would by default be considered an admin.
