Bye bye WeTransfer, hello Wormhole – Simple, private file sharing
Posted by jpluimers on 2026/06/26
Luckily I do not have to transfer large files to others often, but now that WeTransfer has been out for a while, I think Wormhole is a good replacement:

Like KPN Filetransfer below, anyone can use it.
Links on KPN Filetransfer, especially because of the white paper, but also the WeTransfer Terms of Service change that made it unusable for many, and some other alternatives like Send (which you can self-host):
- KPN filetransfer: better than WeTransfer
– automatisch verlopende links (idem)[Wayback/Archive] KPN Secure File Transfer (which is still in beta)
[Wayback/Archive] whitepaper.pdf [Wayback PDF View/PDF View] KPN CISO Labs April 24, 2019 version 1.1.3
This white paper provides the technical overview of KPN Secure File Transfer, an application which allows one party to share a file with another party securely even when the intended receiver is offline. KPN Secure File Transfer does not require users to install any software; instead, users can simply navigate to the server with their web browser to use the service. Since the receiver might be offline, the file is encrypted and stored on the server. KPN Secure File Transfer is designed to ensure that the encryption key remains private to the two parties and does not need to be disclosed to any third party, including the server. The encryption key should be delivered to the receiver in an out-of-band, confiden- tial, and optionally authenticated channel, e.g. secure end-to-end messengers such as Signal [1], Wire [2], and WhatsApp [3], or via encrypted emails with the assistance of PGP [4]. To facilitate the key transmission procedure, in addition to sending the key in plain text, KPN Secure File Transfer can alternatively encode the encryption key as a picture that the receiver can parse simply with a web camera, which saves the inconvenience of entering long encryption keys.
- [Wayback/Archive] Wordt KPN Secure File Transfer nog onderhouden? | KPN Community

WeTransfer:
- [Wayback/Archive] WeTransfer ToS Update : editors
Just a heads up: not sure this has been talked about yet (I swear I searched first!) but WeTransfer updated their ToS June 23rd that includes language that is waaaay broader than what most file sharing services seem to have. IANAL and all that. But, specifically in section 6.3, it gives them the right to:
- Copy, use, modify, distribute, display and perform your content. While this seems plausible as being necessarily for a file sharing service, it is uncharacteristically broad.
- Create derivative works from your content.
- Transfer and/or sub-license your work to others, indefinitely.
- Use it to train machine learning models.
- Use your content to commercialize and develop new technologies or services.
- “You will not be entitled to compensation for any use of Content by us under these Terms.”
The license you grant them is also perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, and transferable.
So if you are sharing any WIPs, unreleased IP content, or client-owned footage, this could be a problem, especially when it comes to NDA work.
