RBAC: root based access control

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/04/01

From a while ago, but a good day to share this:

Although for some scenarios, having two roles “all access” and “no access” is quite sufficient.

Via Chris Oldwood on Twitter: the real meaning of various C++ character types wchart_t, char, tchar and varchar

PRANK: Windows XP Updates

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/01/25

This one is cool: [Wayback/Archive] PRANK: Windows XP Updates.

Note that unlike the screenshot below, the actual prank does count the percentage. The actual page does.

You can start this one and various other OSes plus Windows versions and other pranks via [Wayback/Archive] FakeUpdate.net – Windows Update Prank by fediaFedia (at the time of writing Windows 98 install, Windows Vista update, Windows 8 update, Windows 7 update, Mac OS boot, Windows 10 install, Windows 10 update, steam and “fake ransomware”).

It is a cool and relatively harmless way of teaching people to use their lock screen when away from their machine (Windows: Win+L, Mac OS: Ctrl+Shift+Power).

Daniel Feldman.yaml on Twitter: “What does JIRA stand for? Wrong answers only” / Twitter

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/12/08

The response to [Wayback/Archive] Daniel Feldman.yaml on Twitter: “What does JIRA stand for? Wrong answers only” were so great!

Just a few that I liked very much:

  • It’s a recursive acronym for “Jira isn’t really agile”
  • Just Issues Rarely Addressed
  • jumbled information, reported arbitrarily
  • Jumping
    Into
    Real
    Agony
  • Just Individual Redtape Actions

Learned a while ago from @Caramelia79  at Twitter: “AEG Methode.”

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/08/28

Too bad that [Wayback/Archive] Cara (@Caramelia79) / Twitter deleted their tweet before it got archived, so this lone tweet does not really make sense now:

[Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers on Twitter: “@Caramelia79 @unimanatee Heute neu gelernt: AEG Methode.” / Twitter

The joke however was this:

AEG Methode:

  1. Ausschalten
  2. Einschalten
  3. Geht

It is also known as “AEG-Prinzip” and refers back to the AEG brand that was (still is?) big in Germany for household appliances and industrial products.

The not so cool thing is that by now it seams to mean:

  1. Ausschalten
  2. Einschalten
  3. Geht nicht

as about a year ago some AEG microwave appliance models show errors F606 and F254 after a firmware update: they now think they are steam ovens but cannot find the correct steam hardware:

There is always an XKCD: «xkcd: Is It Worth the Time?»

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/06/09

The Bookmarklets posts have mostly reached past the front of the blog queue, so here goes a tweet from last year:

[Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers on Twitter: “The past week, I learned a ton of HTML, JavaScript and (Shadow) DOM oddities while writing browser bookmarklets to speed up my blogging and @waybackmachine / @archiveis archiving. There is always an XKCD: «xkcd: Is It Worth the Time?» …” / Twitter
