I just added a FIDO U2F Security Key | Yubico as a FIDO second factor to my Google Account: Add a Security Key to your Google Account – Accounts Help.
The cool thing: if you don’t have your FIDO U2F key with you, you can fall back to Google two step verification mechanisms like Authenticator, SMS/Phone or pre-generated backup security codes.

“The code you entered didn’t verify. Learn more Tip: codes are time-dependent. Make sure your phone is set to the correct local time.”
Of course both devices were having the same time, were in the same time zone, etc.

The fix was the second steps from this article (I updated the steps as some of the UI changed): Read the rest of this entry »

It runs on OS X, Windows and Linux:
JAuth is a reference desktop client for the google authenticator. Intended
as an alternative to the iPhone Google Authenticator app and similar.
And it comes with installers in addition to source code.
Interesting.
