Delphi 2010 build numbers don’t tell you what you have installed

I applied update 4 and 5 and the boost update.
Since I didn’t know the exact state my Delphi 2010 was in, I watched the build numbers and the list of items in the Help About box.

Conclusion: based on the Help About box, it is not possible to exactly determine what the state of your Delphi installation is.

Delphi 2010 build numbers

The idea about a build number is that it easily helps you determine what you have installed.

This is the list of build numbers combined with the state of my installation:

Embarcadero® Delphi® 2010 Version 14.0.3513.24210 – RTM
Embarcadero® Delphi® 2010 Version 14.0.3513.24210 – Update 1
Embarcadero® Delphi® 2010 Version 14.0.3513.24210 – Help Update 1
Embarcadero® Delphi® 2010 Version 14.0.3593.25826 – Update 4
Embarcadero® Delphi® 2010 Version 14.0.3593.25826 – Update 5
Embarcadero® Delphi® 2010 Version 14.0.3593.25826 – Boost update

So the build number is not conclusive of what you have installed. So the next step is to watch the installed items.

Installed items

After all the updates were applied, this is the list of installed items in the Help About box:

Delphi and C++ Builder 2010 Update 4
Delphi and C++ Builder 2010 Help Update 1
Delphi and C++ Builder 2010 Update 5 (Database Pack)

So this list is not conclusive either.

This will make it hard to support clients and tell them what might have been fixed in the installation they are running.

Offline install?

For people trying to do offline downloads (yes, we have a couple of clients that have heavy restrictions on when, what and from which machines to download from the internet), these were the files downloaded during the updates:

Update 4 affects the IDE, update 5 affects only the database layer, so the IDE version number does not change. There is an “installed updates” list box, why not just use it?

  Because that requires you to run the product.
  For every piece of software there should be a really quick way (preferably the “Product Version”) that tells you what you have installed or not.

You need to look at BDS.EXE in the “Version Info” Dialog. There is the real version hidden ;)

  – Delphi and C++ Builder 2010 Help Update 1
  – Delphi and C++ Builder 2010 Update 5 (Database Pack)
  
  So: you are right: the BDS.EXE is the real version number; the rest seems a kind of guesswork.

    I installed the latest ISO of RAD Studio with all Updates integrated, but only Delphi… and also only the Demo Version.
    
    This is what happens to me:
    
    Delphi 2010 – v14.0.3593.25826
    Installed Update: Update 4, Update 5 (DB Pack)
    Installed Products: Quality Insight
    Versioninfo of BDS.exe: 14.0.3615.26342
    
    For RAD Studio 2010 the same version informations are shown.
    
    I think its sometimes better to make a clean install. You can get the new ISO from Embarcadero.

I see a different picture! According to About Emarcadero Rad Studio dialog (for the Architect edition):

Build number for me is 14.0.3615.26342

Installed Updates:
Delphi and C++Builder 2010 Update 4
Delphi and C++Builder 2010 Help Update 1
Delphi and C++Builder 2010 Update 5 (Database Pack)
C++Builder 2010 Boost Update

Installed Products:
Embarcadero Delphi 2010
Embarcadero C++Builder 2010
Embarcadero Quality Insight

I’m pretty sure I installed Update 1 but that appears to be the only update missing in the About box list.

  Compared to your list:
  
  In the “Installed Updates”, I’m missing “C++ Builder 2010 Boost Update” (even though it is installed).
  In the “Installed Products”, I’m missing “Embarcadero Delphi 2010” and “Embarcadero C++Builder 2010” (which both work fine) if I run the Delphi or C++ Builder shortcut (but they show when I run the RAD Studio shortcut).
  But I do have “ModelMaker Code Explorer” in the “Installed Products”.
  And I do have GExperts installed.
  
  It is odd: the splash screen clearly indicates that “Embarcadero C++ Builder 2010 Architect” and “Embarcadero Delphi 2010 Architect” are being loaded for all 3 shortcuts.

Given that update 4 includes update 1 is correct it no longer displays update 1 and increments the build number. Also it is correct that help updates does not change the build number. Probably update 1 didn’t change the build number because it just solved license issues and thereby didn’t modify any functionalities of the product.
Boost is for C++ Builder only, thereby it won’t appear in a Delphi-only installation. I just wonder about the database pack, if it just updated dbExpress drivers or if it touched libraries and thereby compiled applications too.

  Well, it is a bit like OmniThreadLibrary 1.04b – It’s all Embarcadero’s fault: if there is no really fast and obvious way to tell what you have installed (i.e. not starting the fattest version of the IDE and looking in the about box), then you are bound to a support burden.
  
  I checked with the full IDE shortcut (i.e. not the Delphi-only IDE) shows more product info, but there it does not show the C++ Builder 2010 Boost Update.
  It is installed (the update checker does indicate there is nothing left to install), but the About Box does not seem to know about it.
  
  Yet another reason to increment the product version for all kinds of updates.
