Android: manually install Google Play Services 4.2.39 so AllCast and others can stream to Chromecast

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/02/09

Over the years, Google Play Services has started to play a much bigger role, arguably more important than the Android version (also making it impossible to fork Android: Neither Microsoft, Nokia, nor anyone else should fork Android. It’s unforkable. | Ars Technica).

This shows again with the publication of the new Google cast SDK with public Chromecast support release last weak (I think the SDK name being broader than Googlecast means there will be much more to come in the feature).

Though most current Android users are still at version 4.1.32 of the Google Play Services, Google is rolling out a 4.2.39 version to enable that SDK. After it has rolled out to enough devices, then the Play Services library version 15 part of the SDK will be released for Android as well (which will complement the existing support for the iOS and Chrome platforms).

The odd thing: it looks like *some* developers already have this SDK, as AllCast already has been updated and it does not work with Google Play Services 4.1.32, but it does work with Google Play Services version 4.2.39. Below I show you how I tested this, and how to manually upgrade your Android device to use Google Play Services 4.2.39. Read the rest of this entry »

Ready to cast: Chromecast now open to developers with the Google Cast SDK #interesting #fun (via: Chromium Blog)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/02/03

With a more decent internet connection during our trip, it is time to catch up on some recent news.

The first that caught my eye was that the Chromecast API now is open to all developers.

Developer information is available through Casting Your Content to the Big Screen – Google Cast — Google Developers.

You need to pay a one-time USD 5 fee per development account (how’s that Apple?) for the Google Cast SDK Developer Console.

After that, you will have to register your Chromecast device(s) and custom or styled media receiver apps.

Interesting. Fun.

I hope this can be combined with the new Smart Mobile Studio 2.0 release or the Delphi for Android support.

Will get back on that as soon as I’m back home.

Google Play stores: Tides Near Me and Tide Chart FREE (+TidesnearMe1 ; app.hanitaro.com) do not install outside the USA.

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/01/29

What worked to get Google Voice on my USA cell phone with a European Google account, didn’t work for the top “Tidal” listings Tides Near Me and Tide Charts FREE (I didn’t bother checking any payed hanitaro app).

Apparently truckloads of developers think it is wise to limit their application to a certain geographic region, excluding all tourists as potential customers.

Fine: I installed “Florida Tide Times” and it works well, especially the built-in map makes it really easy to use.

I wanted this because we were staying at Sanibel Island (Florida) and wanted to do some low-tide shelling (some love shelling) as that’s the best time to find many and inspect both the living creatures, and collect dead shells.

Lesson: make your app available as widely as possible or you will miss customers.

Back to Google Voice

If you have a USA phone number, you can apply for a free Google Voice number that can make free USA phone calls (and a lot more) from either the Google Voice app, or voice.google.com in your internet browser with intuitive shortcut key support, the Chrome plugin or even from GMail using the https://mail.google.com/mail/?voice URL. Google 2 factor authorization: “The code you entered didn’t verify. Learn more Tip: codes are time-dependent…”

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/01/18

Not sure what went wrong, but I could not use 2 factor authentication, but somehow the codes generated by the Google Authenticator didn’t work at all. When entering the codes, I got this message:

“The code you entered didn’t verify. Learn more Tip: codes are time-dependent. Make sure your phone is set to the correct local time.”

Of course both devices were having the same time, were in the same time zone, etc.

The “codes are time-dependent” – Google Search got me on the right track.

The fix was the second steps from this article (I updated the steps as some of the UI changed): Read the rest of this entry »

If Google Chrome keeps asking “Install the Hangouts Plugin to get started” when starting a video chat

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/12/16

When Google Chrome keeps coming back with “Install the Hangouts Plugin to get started”, then try this solution:

I solve this problem for my self. Manualy turn on Google Talk Plugin in chrome://plugins/ (one of three plugins was turned off).

On Mac, Chrome dock Icon shows a number on it: it is the number of outstanding downloads

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/10/18

Martin Millstam posted this on Google Groups:

I figured out that it was the number of active downloads.

Not very intuitive as I first thought it was pending updates to Chrome, then to Extensions.

It turned out to be the number of active downloads.

It wasn’t intuitive for me either (:

Interesting series of Chrome Development articles by Umar Hansa | Nettuts+

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/10/03

If you (want to) do web-development with Chrome, then be sure to read the articles by Umar Hansa | Nettuts+.

At the time of writing, there were three articles centered around using Google Chrome as part of your developemt suite, and a few more on things like HTML 5 and CSS:

Besides the technical insight, I also very much like the writing style. Great job Umar!

Parameters for use in a Google Maps URL (zoom level, position, map-type, etc; via StackOverflow)

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/09/11

Thanks for StackOverflow user xordon for this answer:

This is current accepted way to link to a specific lat lon (rather than search for the nearest object).

http://maps.google.com/maps?z=12&t=m&q=loc:38.9419+-78.3020

  • z is the zoom level (1-20)
  • t is the map type (“m” map, “k” satellite, “h” hybrid, “p” terrain, “e” GoogleEarth)
  • q is the search query, if it is prefixed by loc: then google assumes it is a lat lon separated by a +
