One day I’m going to need this: Make A Bootable Windows 10 USB Install Stick On Linux With WinUSB Fork ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blog

So I’m glad WinUSB (which hadn’t been maintained for a long time) got forked on github by slaka.

Since my day-to-day unix-like system is OS X, I’d love a good working solution there too which means I probably need to investigate a bit along these lines:

Using diskpart in a Windows VM (which is kind of backwards):
- diskpart and copying at Creating a Bootable Windows 7 USB Disk in OS X ML – post #18 | MacRumors Forums
- this should include getting the bootsector at Creating a Bootable Windows 7 USB Disk in OS X ML – post #23 | MacRumors Forums / Source: Creating a Bootable Windows 7 USB Disk in OS X ML – post #24 | MacRumors Forums
Using Disk Utility and UEFI (only works for Windows 8 and up):
- Creating a Windows setup USB in OS X – Multi-booting and Virtualisation – InsanelyMac Forum
Using Boot Camp Assistant and a modified Info.plist (which for El Capitan needs some extra work):
- Create a Windows 7 / 8 Bootable USB Drive with Mac – COMPLETE SOLUTION – Michael Anastasiou | Michael Anastasiou
- Works way better than using How to Copy an ISO to a USB Drive from Mac OS X with dd (this link is to the comment explaining Boot Camp Assitant is way better)

Powershell 4.0 hates Lucida Console and switches to raster fonts

PowerShell 4.0 is madly in love with “English (United States)”

A long time ago I started writing up my blog post like this in March 2015 when I bumped into this the first time when upgrading from PowerShell 2 to PowerShell 4:

It seems there is no real workaround:

[No wayback: Microsoft Connect got ditched] Powershell 4 console font issue | Microsoft Connect.

[Wayback] Cannot change powershell default font to Lucida Console – Super User.

[No wayback: Microsoft Connect got ditched] Console host does not allow font adjustment in V3 | Microsoft Connect.

Good and not so good news: after reading the below linked posts, this is what works:

PowerShell 4 and up works fine with any [Wayback] Lucida Console size (including 12) and boldness
- only when the “Language for non-Unicode programs” is set to “English (United States)”.
PowerShell 4 works fine with [Wayback] Consolas on any size and boldness
- for any “Language for non-Unicode programs”

So if you’re like me and switch between “Dutch (Netherlands)” and “English (Ireland)” a lot (both use the EURO as currency, but have distinct enough other locale settings to cover a lot of European stuff) then you need to get used to the Consolas font.

Windows 7+ RDP logon will only disconnect (not logoff) current user (XP would)

One of the things I figured out with Windows 7 and up is that when logging in over RDP an existing user would be disconnected unlike Windows XP that would logoff the existing user.

If you want them to logoff there are basically two options:

Log them off through the task manager: Windows 7 – force existing user session to logoff, not disconnect, at log on – Super User
Log them off through a script: batch – How can I automatically log out users from a Windows machine? – Super User

I will dig into the scripts one day as I’ve not needed this too often (I use Task Manager for now).

Windows PPTP – How to Create a VPN Server on Your Windows Computer Without Installing Any Software

Windows has the built-in ability to function as VPN server, although this option is hidden. This trick works on both Windows 7 and Windows 8. The server uses the point-to-point tunneling protocol (PPTP.)

One day this might come in handy though I need to investigate a bit more on PPTP security issues first: might need to go for L2TP/IPsec instead.

One file kept getting added to the git modified list: service/src/main/MySOAPdefinition.pas.

It was part of a repository that had been migrated from SVN (more on that in a future blog post) and along the way been renamed in directory service/src/main from MySOAPdefinition.pas to MySoapDefinition.pas. SVN (and TortoiseSVN) don’t object to this. But git does.

You’d see this on the command-line:

>git status
On branch develop
Your branch is up-to-date with 'origin/develop'.
Changes not staged for commit:
  (use "git add ..." to update what will be committed)
  (use "git checkout -- ..." to discard changes in working directory)

        modified:   service/src/main/MySOAPdefinition.pas

no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a")

>git add service\src\main\MySoapDefinition.pas

>git status

Very interesting question and answers: windows 7 – Available memory differs by several GiB from what is installed – Super User.

Basically the missing memory can be due to:

Windows licensing limitations
Mapping of device memory into virtual memory space (especially on x86 systems)

This affects both server and client versions of Windows. Client versions are more restrictive because of the vast amounts of potentially faulty drivers involved.

HP Color LaserJet 9500HDN and stock Windows 8.1 x64 drivers: PCL XL error Warning: IllegalMediaSource – via: Server Fault

HP Printers, PCL6 and drivers are always a fight to get right.

In this case the Microsoft stock Windows 8.1 x64 drivers always result in my HP LaserJet 9500 HDN printing a page like this from the same tray the last print job ran:

PCL XL error

        Warning: IllegalMediaSource

I’ve seen similar results with other Windows, printer and driver combinations (not limited to Microsoft drivers, but always PCL related), but never knew the solution.

Reading the answer, I totally recognise it: always some form of PCL6 driver was involved, and switching to PostScript solved it.

Note that there are three varieties of the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows:

PCL5
PCL6
PostScript

So now I know to always install the first and the last (:
