Setting the language of HP Solution Center needs a full uninstall/install cycle *and* the non-Unicode Windows Language to be set

Posted by jpluimers on 2016/08/12

I can imagine why some people hate the HP Solution Center software: it’s a dork on the language front and not even Unicode-aware.

You cannot set the language form inside it. The language is fixed at install time. You’d think it would take the users language settings for that. But it doesn’t: it takes the users non-Unicode language setting for it. Which – of course – you cannot find when searching in the control panel for Language (or Dutch Taal) you get there by searching for Region (or Dutch Regio).

This succeeds:

Nederlands (Nederland)

It fails when it is set to:

Engels (Verenigde Staten)

HP Color LaserJet 9500HDN and stock Windows 8.1 x64 drivers: PCL XL error Warning: IllegalMediaSource – via: Server Fault

Posted by jpluimers on 2016/06/20

HP Printers, PCL6 and drivers are always a fight to get right.

In this case the Microsoft stock Windows 8.1 x64 drivers always result in my HP LaserJet 9500 HDN printing a page like this from the same tray the last print job ran:

PCL XL error

        Warning: IllegalMediaSource

I’ve seen similar results with other Windows, printer and driver combinations (not limited to Microsoft drivers, but always PCL related), but never knew the solution.

Reading the answer, I totally recognise it: always some form of PCL6 driver was involved, and switching to PostScript solved it.

Note that there are three varieties of the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows:

  • PCL5
  • PCL6
  • PostScript

So now I know to always install the first and the last (:

Solution for HP LaserJet 4050 Can’t select Tray 1 in driver (via: Enterprise Business Community)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/05/09

This happened to a client as well: the stock Windows Vista PCL5 driver for an IP-connected HP LaserJet 4050TN would not allow you to select a paper tray. Not for default settings, nor for printing preferences.

The solution: download the HP PCL6 driver for Windows Vista from HP LaserJet 4050 Printer series –  Download drivers and software .

Question:

LJ 4050n – Can’t select Tray 1 in driver

I have a 4050n connected to a small LAN, with 3 XP-Pro SP2 machines. These all print directly using standard TCP/IP ports. They were installed using the PCL5e driver downloaded from HP ( 4.27.4050.410 12 Dec 2003 ) This all basically works.

The only problem is I cannot select tray 1. The ‘paper source’ drop-down is greyed out at ‘auto select’. Printer always prints from tray 2 ( A4 Plain. )

Answer:

Try the PCL6 for a 4000TN, the printer still works if a 4050 has a 4000 driver loaded, had similar problems just used the 4000 driver.
