When you need to board at Gate G9 through G12 at SFO airport inrternational terminal A, then don’t go to the men’s restrooms near G9:G12 at the upper level: the smell of urine is so strong and the floor so filthy that I got back in the hall finding clearner one’s.

I needed a quick means to download the latest 7-zip from the command-line in Windows.
This batchfile makes use of these tools:
7-zip has a download page that contains lines like these:
<TD class="Item" align="center"><A href="http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z465.exe">Download</A></TD>

Most pages don’t do a page submit when you press the Enter key in a combobox.
KLM does in their online check-in.
Which means that a keyboard groupie like me basically is forced to use the mouse to select country a zillion times (Netherlands for all of the group members for Nationality, Passport, etc).
Other sites do it right and accept this:
- Press down-key to open combobox
- Press N key a couple of time to select Netherlands
- Press Enter key to accept Netherlands
- Press Tab key to go to next field
KLM online check-in does a page submit on each time you get to step 3, refreshes the page, and moves the focus to some non-input fied.
Big #fail.

From a batch-file I recently had to start Windows Explorer, at the same time select a specific file or directory.
This turned out pretty easy: use the /select command-line switch from Windows Explorer.
In fact, Windows Explorer has a few command-line switches, and the “explorer” commandline parameters “/n” “/e” “/select” “/root” “/start” site:microsoft.com query will find quite a few topics about it: Read the rest of this entry »

While writing this blog entry, I’m installing my new copy of Delphi XE (formerly called Delphi 2011 by some people).
Delphi XE and RAD Studio XE got RTM today, and are now available for purchase.
Contact my colleague Gwan Tan if you want to order it from Dutch speaking countries, and Thorsten Nannen if you want to order it from German speaking countries. Read the rest of this entry »

Sometimes the VMware tools need to be restarted in order to get the shared clipboard functionality working again.
From inside a Windows VM, you can do that like this:
net stop vmtools
This will create this output:
The VMware Tools Service service is stopping.
The VMware Tools Service service was stopped successfully.
Then start the service again:
net start vmtools
Giving this output:
The VMware Tools Service service is starting.
The VMware Tools Service service was started successfully.
From outside your virtual machine, you can do it like on this URL using sc: http://www.dailyhypervisor.com/2009/03/25/script-restarting-vmware-tools-remotely/

Onderstaande krijg je te zien als je bij ABN AMRO aan het internetbankieren bent.
Handig als je geen kinderen hebt, en echt offending als je geen kinderen wilt of kunt krijgen:

Now your readers can have an easy way to tweet about your blog postings too: New Twitter “Tweet Button”.
From the post by Andy P (wordpress team):
New Twitter “Tweet Button”
…

…
When one of your readers hits the Tweet Button, they will be shown a popup that includes a shortened link to your post. Readers can add in a quick message, and then hit “Tweet” to send the post to their Twitter feed as a tweet — all without leaving your blog.
…
To enable the button on your blog please visit the “Appearance > Extras” menu and select the “Show a Twitter Tweet Button on my posts” option.
Edit: 20100901:
The WordPress team has moved the Twitter Tweet button into Settings > Sharing. In addition to that, they added sharing mechanisms for FaceBook, Press This, Reddit, Digg, StumbleUpon, Email and Print.
In addition to those, you can define your own sharing methods.
You can read more about this move here.

Anthony Frazier mentions two very true paths for optimizing your Delphi compile times:
- Avoid units with the “read-only” attribute set.
- Avoid large circular dependency groups, particularly if you put everything in the interface’s uses clause rather than the implementation uses clause.
To get rid of the second, you should split your interface and your implementation.
Often, one of these two solutions work for that well:
- Create the interface as a base class, then implement it in a descendant.
- Create the interface as a Delphi interface, then implement it in a class.
Only if those options do not work, then start using Delphi SpeedUp by Andreas Hausladen.

Be sure to watch the radstudiodemos project at sourceforge.
It contains the RAD Studio Demos from Embarcadero in this SVN repository.
Which means that the demos of the current RAD Studio version are there, and Embarcadero is filling it with the Demos from the upcoming Delphi XE version.
In fact, quite a few Delphi XE demos have been checked in already.
John Kaster will put on the C# version of DbxUtils on-line there soon.
