Desktop solution: I want to turn off ONLY the AI Summary in Gmail. – Gmail Community

Posted by jpluimers on 2026/06/22

Most solutions mention to disable all “Smart features” in order to not have the AI summary in Gmail, but that disables a lot more than just the AI summary.

Luckily I found the desktop solution in [Wayback/Archive] I want to turn off ONLY the AI Summary in Gmail. – Gmail Community to which I added steps, links and screenshots:

  1. In gmail, navigate to the general settings, or use this direct link: mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#settings/general
  2. Look for “Google Workspace smart features” (which is directly under “Smart features”), then click the button “Manage Workspace smart feature settings” to get to this dialog:

  3. In that dialog, uncheck “Smart Features in Google Workspace” then press the “Save” button

The original answer from the above link (note that some things are named differently – maybe Google changes naming over time):

If you want to turn off AI summaries but keep things like Categories, then in the Gmail settings (ideally do this on Desktop…I would need to spend a little time figuring out what the settings are called from mobile), you’d want to do the following:
1. In Gmail, go to the Settings gear make sure you select All Settings
2. On the general tab, check the box for Smart Features. (This is because that check is a on/off switch for ALL the smart features. Unless you want a quick way to turn off ALL smart features in Gmail, you should not be using this.)
3. The setting you actually want to uncheck for AI Summaries comes below…it is in a section called “Google Workspace Smart Features”, where there is a button to “Manage Workspace Smart Features”. When you click that, UNcheck “Smart Features in Workspace.”
When you do this, the little AI star on the search magnifying glass should disappear (and change back to a regular magnifying glass), and AI overviews/AI summaries should not be generated.
