html – CSS Display an Image Resized and Cropped – Stack Overflow

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/08/25

[WayBack] html – CSS Display an Image Resized and Cropped – Stack Overflow (thanks [WayBack] roborourke!); see full answer link for runnable snippet and HTML (the WordPress editor keeps fucking up preformatted code blocks with html or XML in it).

You could use a combination of both methods eg.

    .crop {
        width: 200px;
        height: 150px;
        overflow: hidden;
    }

    .crop img {
        width: 400px;
        height: 300px;
        margin: -75px 0 0 -100px;
    }

You embed the img in a div with class .crop, or in-line the styles in the img and div tags.

Abel Wang, a true legend, is gone.

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/07/30

Hopefully my response to his spouse was appropriate enough:

Thanks for this tribute. It’s amazing, lovely, wonderful, all at the same time.

Abel is one of the persons that I would have loved to meet in real life.

I’m forever grateful that Scott Hanselman got me into touch with Abel Wang. Abel informed and motivated me. After that we stayed in touch every now and then about being ill and how to deal with that.

I had to contemplate for a while as this hit me harder than I thought, especially given the “always positive Abel” he is in my – and many others’ – minds.

So to all his close ones: remember the positivity and try to be like that. Abel expects that from us.

Glad I could send him some good thoughts last week, and miss him already.

Check if this still happens: some Twitter content in the WayBack machine gets a slash in the URL removed during rendering on Chrome

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/06/11

From my research list; check if this still happens: [WayBack] Saving Twitter content in the WayBack archive: the fully loaded page has a wrong trailing URL (missing the second slash before the authority) · GitHub

  1. Visited https://twitter.com/MarkGraham
  2. Saved it using https://web.archive.org/save/https://twitter.com/MarkGraham
  3. Waited for the save to complete and the page to fully load and got https://web.archive.org/web/20190607081047/https:/twitter.com/MarkGraham
  4. Observed the trailing part is not a valid URL any more https:/twitter.com/MarkGraham: it is missing the second slash before the authority (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Resource_Identifier#Generic_syntax)

This might be a Twitter.com thing:

Notes:

  • I have only tested this with my Chrome configurations on various machines (both regular and anonymous tabs) over at least a year; I need to figure out what happens when using different browsers.
  • It does not always happen.

Via: [WayBack] Jeroen Pluimers on Twitter: “I understand that the sites themselves pay a big role in this. That’s why I have the mangling of URLs that sometimes happens on my research list. I made this quick summary: …”

Het hopelijk tijdelijke afscheid door Haagse Insider🕵🏻‍♂️ (@HaagseInsider) | Twitter

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/05/13

From Yahoo closing Answers tonight to blocking ads on YouTube

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/05/04

The discussion on Yahoo closing Answers tonight quickly went from alternative text based question/answer sites to long YouTube videos having hardly any content but ads, to blocking these ads: [Wayback] Yahoo sluit Answers-dienst na vijftien jaar en verwijdert inhoud – IT Pro – Nieuws – Tweakers

So here are some links where I can learn a bit of browser plugin and Android development technology as well:

(What I dislike most about ads is that they start at unnatural positions in the stream and cover topics I’m totally not interested in).

It did a splendid job at decoding email files in MIME format Quoted-printable.
