This year, the Dutch Queens day this year had a special nature. On the nation level: the abdication by former Queen, now Princess Beatrix, and the succession and inauguration of King Willem-Alexander. On the marching band level: Adest Musica had their Dutch premiere of the new show Mother Earth which will be their entry during the quadrennial Word Music Concours this summer. On the personal level, my best friend visiting The Netherlands for just a few days, so finally a chance to catch up in person.
So I totally missed another important historic event: the 20th birthday of the releasing the WWW source code in the public domain.
On the 30st of April 1993, CERN: Read the rest of this entry »

This is more elaborate English version of a short Dutch message I recently sent to explain the differences between VCL and FMX:
Do not regard FMX as a replacement for VCL: they are different kinds of frameworks.
VCL is a wrapper around Windows Controls. In itself, it has not much functionality: it exposes the underlying Windows functionality. The exception are data aware controls that provide basic functionality for writing data aware applications. There is a huge 3rd party market for extending VCL support, for instance providing extra Windows functionality, enriching data aware behaviour (look at all those fancy data aware grids), and many more.
FMX is the FireMonkey X-platform framework. Major functionalities are vector based 2D, 3D drawing and controls, and support for styles and composition.
When introducing FMX in Delphi XE2, Embarcadero also introduced a new way of data binding that is shared with FMX and VCL. FMX extends this a bit to some basic data aware controls.
Gone are most of the platform specific features like drag & drop, full blown Windows Shell ListViews, etc. There are some controls that manifests themselves differently on each supported platform (like Pickers), but most of that is currently left to the 3rd party FMX component market.
So if you want FMX to replace VCL, then be prepared for quite some shopping in the 3rd party market.
CLX tried to be a full blown cross platform VCL replacement, but that didn’t work very well.

When you directly post a blog entry without scheduling, then WordPress.com adds this to your URL: &message=6&postpost=v2
It alters the left pane indicating how many posts you have done so far, but more importantly: suggests some tags based on the content of your post.
You can add this pane yourself by adding &postpost=v2 to your post editing URL.
So if your URL is something like this:
and you make it like this:
then you can add the suggested tags with ease.
I find that much easier than to use the “Choose from the most used tags” feature.

Earlier this week, I posted abut ThinkPad W701: Win7 Ultimate x64 suddenly only saw 8GB RAM of 16GB (via: [H]ard|Forum).
One of the search results in my query indicated it would be possible to put 32GB in it.
That’s nice, as the official Lenovo ThinkPad W701 specs and Lenovo ThinkPad W701 2500 Overview & Specs – Laptops – CNET Reviews indicate it should max out with 16GB.
This Google search returns lots of results indicating people actually run it with 32GB RAM using 4x8GB memory modules:

Last quarter, 11 issues of Micro Cornucopia appeared on BitSavers including the final May 1990 issue.
This month, another 7 issues appeared, most of which cover a form of Pascal in one or more of the articles and advertisements:
A fun thing to notice are the advertisements for Modula-2. Logitech Modula-2. Yes though the Logitech Wikipedia page does not mention it at all, Logitech didn’t only sell mice, keyboards and web-cams. They had more products. Being Swiss, they were big in Modula-2. And Bitsavers has a PDF of that too: Logitech_Modula-2_86_1.0_Feb84.pdf
The only issues still to be scanned are #28 till #32.

On my brand new Google Nexus 4, I had this problem that some contacts were merged based on their last name.
They were merged only on the phone: at the Google Contacts web page, they still were separate.
The issue was very much “in my face”, as one of the merges was my brother and mother. For which I am pretty sure they are separate entities, both alive and kicking.
Browsing for a solution, I found these links (the first one got me to the others):
The issue is still there (I synced 3 weeks ago).
The solution is per device (the sync breaks on your device, not on Google Contacts).
The steps of the solution were not completely clear, so below are screenshots. Click on each screenshot to get a larger crisp 768×1280 HD image. Read the rest of this entry »

Today, Apple released SMC version 1.1 for MacBook Pro machines that especially Retina owners will like: it fixes their fan issue that has been present for months, but caused some stir lately.
Apple rushed this update. In fact, it is so new, not even EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs lists it.
It affects both mid 2012 and early 2013 models.
This is how to update:
I had the same problem with the basic installation. Just do the OSX updates from the App Store and the problem will disappear.
Lots of users are reporting the below SMC update fixes the fan issue.
It worked for my MacBook Retina too.

It starts to be not so funny any more: almost every week a new Java security update.
Time to update again, to stay secure and install the patch: Security Alert CVE-2013-1493.
On the funny side: Java 0day countdown.
