Cool video about basic electronic components explained:
It goes well with these posts:
- [WayBack] Resistor Sizes and Packages » Resistor Guide
- [WayBack] The importance of wattage in resistors
- [WayBack] resistor decoder that Brett Victor created [WayBack] http://worrydream.com/ResistorDecoder/resistors.pdf
Resistor power values
For axial resistors, they are not very well standardised, but [WayBack] Resistor Sizes and Packages » Resistor Guide has a nice table and [WayBack] The importance of wattage in resistors has a graph:
Power rating Body length (l) Body diameter (d) Lead length (a) Lead diameter (da) Watt mm mm mm mm 1/8 (0.125) 3.0 ± 0.3 1.8 ± 0.3 28 ± 3 0.45 ± 0.05 1/4 (0.25) 6.5 ± 0.5 2.5 ± 0.3 28 ± 3 0.6 ± 0.05 1/2 (0.5) 8.5 ± 0.5 3.2 ± 0.3 28 ± 3 0.6 ± 0.05 1 11 ± 1 5 ± 0.5 28 ± 3 0.8 ± 0.05

Or you try to remember the bands in less or more rude ways. It’s not completely rainbow with black/gray/white as brown isn’t technically part of a rainbow. So here you go:
Values: | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Bad | Bad | Big | Better | Black |
Beer | Boys | Boys | Be | Brown |
Rots | Rape | Race | Right | Red |
Our | Our | Our | Or | Orange |
