I never found the cause for this error:
The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecing later or contact your system administrator.
I tried all the links I found via The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecing later or contact your system administrator. – Google Search
In the end I did a hard power down of the machine and rebooted. The error never returned.
I tried these links all to no avail:
- Could not login, and remote registry editing and remote PowerShell were disabled: [FIX] The Number Of Connections To This Computer Is Limited And All Connections Are In Use Right Now
- I could not reach the EventLog remotely: How to troubleshoot “The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecting later or contact your system administrator.” warning message | Cengiz Kuskaya.
- Disconnecting networks didn’t work: login – Windows 8 cannot log in into a locked computer – Super User.
- Cold boot did work: Windows 8 cannot log in into a locked computer (Network Steve Forum)

There are many more (for me) “local” Data Centers in:
- Amsterdam Search – Data Center Map.
- The Netherlands Search – Data Center Map.
