The Git Commands I Run Before Reading Any Code

Posted by jpluimers on 2026/09/22

When joining or assessing a team or taking up a codebase, be sure to run these five git commands to get a quick overview on the state of affairs: [Wayback/Archive] The Git Commands I Run Before Reading Any Code

These five commands take a couple minutes to run. They won’t tell you everything. But you’ll know which code to read first, and what to look for when you get there. That’s the difference between spending your first day reading the codebase methodically and spending it wandering.

This is the first hour of what I do in a codebase audit. Here’s what the rest of the week looks like.

Via [Wayback/Archive] Jocelynephiliac :reclaimer:: “This all really good, love thi…” – Twipped Social (Private):

This all really good, love this. It’s all analyzing social behaviors, not code at all.

“Five git commands that tell you where a codebase hurts before you open a single file. Churn hotspots, bus factor, bug clusters, and crisis patterns.”

The commands:

Improving the JavaScript Bookmarklet to enable Mastodon publishing for a WordPress.com post that is edited in the Classic Editor

Posted by jpluimers on 2026/09/22

A while back (actually: a long time ago), in JavaScript Bookmarklet to enable Mastodon publishing for a WordPress.com post that is edited in the Classic Editor I promised to improve that code.

Actually I did improve the gist, but I forgot to write the blog post on it.

So below is the old code, new code, and explanation of the improvements.

linux – How can I have `less` automatically decompress `xz` files like it did with `gz` files on my old SUSE distro? – Super User

Posted by jpluimers on 2026/09/21

I forgot to queue up what I figured out in 2017, so here it finally is: install [Wayback/Archive] lesspipe.sh, a preprocessor for less download | SourceForge.net and integrate it.

Posted by jpluimers on 2026/09/21

Vandaag 30 jaar geleden: Jongeren vinden Internet saai – Archief – TROUW

Posted by jpluimers on 2026/09/21

Eerder ophef:

How can I make WiFi passwords per-user rather than per-system? – The Old New Thing

Posted by jpluimers on 2026/09/18

Need to figure out how to script [Wayback/Archive] How can I make WiFi passwords per-user rather than per-system? – The Old New Thing

This is hampered by the first link in the article generating a 404, the text of the link containing soft hyphens, a plain Google Search for script just failing.

Some links that I figured out which should help me:
